Special Law Enforcement Unit Fights Crimes Against Children

The crimes, the laws, the people working to stop it, the victims, the criminals and what we can we do to protect the children.

An essay and editorial by Grade 12 Student Amy Hopkins

Category: Investment, Defense

May 25, 2010 (NHSK newswire) - My essay is on child exploitation. As access to the Internet is now available to almost everyone, as cell phones can be used for texting (and sexting), as children seem to be willing to do almost anything to fit in and as all these things seem to be affecting kids at a younger and younger age, I had to stop and ask myself, why? Why is this happening? What is being done to help these kids? What can I do? What can we all do?

I had personal experience with Internet luring (at age 13), Internet addiction, and cyber-bullying. The Internet was a way for me to belong, a place where no one could hurt me, and I could be anyone I wanted with nothing bad happening, or so I thought. The Internet was a safe place where no one knew my name unless I told them (yeah, right!) A predator tried to take advantage of me by luring me to meet him at one of our local parks. I was stupid and went. I took a friend with me and told my Grandmother. (I think I was secretly hoping she’d tell my Mom who would stop me or come get me, but she didn’t) Luckily, the guy didn’t show up, but I was so freaked out that I told my Mom later anyway. That was when my family first learned of cypertip.ca and the RCMP – E Division’s I.C.E. Unit – The Integrated Child Exploitation Unit.

My Mom went online and found cybertip.ca and made a report on what had happened. She had the user name and the fake info the guy had given me. She really didn’t think anything would come of it and was totally shocked when a few days later she received an email from A/Sgt Janis Gray of the Integrated Child Exploitation Unit:

Good Afternoon Ms Hopkins,

My name is Janis Gray and I am in charge of the Integrated Child Exploitation Team in British Columbia.
Your cybertip was forwarded to my unit and I wanted to update you in that, we are trying to locate the subject known to you as "Jay" or "@hotmail.com" (email withheld for privacy reasons)
As per your request to cybertip I will not release any information regarding your daughter's identity, unless discussed with yourself.
I will update you periodically if you wish.
Thank you for your report.

Regards
Janis Gray
A/Sgt Janis B GRAY
"E" Division Major Crime
NCO i/c Integrated Child Exploitation Team

The next day she got a call from Janis and they talked about what had happened and Sgt. Gray told her that an officer had been assigned to my case. I was totally freaking out – I had a CASE!
